American Cheese - Help Me Out

To all of my lovely American followers, please help me out. What the heck is American cheese? We were watching Drive Ins, Diners, and Dives tonight and some cook said, "I insist on American cheese." Is American cheese the same thing as cheddar? My husband is English and in England, cheddar is just that cheese that originated in Cheddar. In Canada, cheddar cheese is the basic type of cheese you get if you ask for cheese on something.

Would an American reader please respond?

  1. American Cheese is processed cheese - like Kraft Singles. It melts easily and is used on Cheeseburgers and grilled cheese. You can buy it in blocks or bags of shreds. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole (except for Kraft Singles in a grilled cheese). I am a Cheddar lover. Hope this helps. (I love Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives!)

  2. It is not like cheddar at all. Cheddar is much better! I do not like american cheese and will more times than not go cheeseless rather than having it on my food. It's just got no sharpness too it and it really rather a boring cheese!

  3. Thanks for clearing up this mystery ladies. We have Velveeta products in Canada too, but we don't call it Canadian cheese. Of all the great cheese you have in the U.S.A., why the heck did they call processed cheese American cheese?
    Bye for now,

  4. LOL! I guess you got you're answer... Lots of people don't like american cheese and I think you either don't or find it a comfort food (like a simple food from childhood) and I'm raising my hand here.

Its not exactly like velveeta but its close to that. I think the processed cheese food thing is because its not exactly 'cheese' in the ripened fermented sense of what happens with say cheddar - and its more something thats made. So to call it cheese isnt really correct. sort of a labeling issue. Like you can say something is chocolate coated but somethings actually have a chocolate flavored covering because there isnt all that much chocolate in it...
